An activist project to raise awareness, provoke debate and inform feminist arguments and actions.
Representations of Women in the Media (Reps) is a grassroots, volunteer-led research project culminating in exhibitions, presentations and publication of the findings. The project aims to raise awareness, research and to provoke debate and action in response to the way in which women are represented in the media.
The evidence collected by participants of the Reps projects demonstrates the very real gender bias still to be found in our culture and brings our attention to the negative impact this has on women's sense of self. As Lisa Tickner has put it: “Representations enter our collective social understandings, constituting our sense of ourselves, the positions we take up in the world, and the possibilities we see for action in it.” The Reps project is a reaction to this negative influence on women's lives and seeks to constructively oppose gender bias in the media. We are working for better, fairer, more equitable representation of women in the media. |

Bidisha spoke eloquently, with humour and passion, about her experiences in the media, especially the BBC. Sian outlined the evidence that the Reps Of Women project has been collating and Sue argued that the gender imbalance in the media matters at a profound societal level and suggested some things that might be done about it. Discussion was opened to the floor and women of all ages contributed in an energized and positive atmosphere; the desire for a further meeting to plan action was expressed. Watch this space! The last wave may have receded, but on Sunday we felt the tide rising and the next wave will carry us high up the beach. Be part of that wave. Where are the women? Here they are!
